Basin: Basins are similar to domes, but instead of bulging, they dip downward in
the center and create a bowl-shape depression that appears like a syncline. An
eroded basin is recognized by the younger rock layers in its center and older rock
layers around the outside (see Figure 9-11).

Faulting in response to stress
Closer to the surface, the rocks are cooler and more brittle. When these rocks respond
to stress, they are more likely to fault, which means fracture and crack. The two pieces
of rock that separate, creating a fault, are called the fault blocks; they separate along the
fault plane, as illustrated in Figure 9-12.
