promote groups at various trade shows. Rural
tourism growth has been particularly impres-
sive, as the number of rural tourism businesses
has grown from less than 100 in 1999 to 251 in
2003 (Croatian Chamber of Economy, 2005).
The group of adventure tourism operators,
founded in 2004, soon registered more than
100 members involved in the provision of such
activities as rafting, surfing, kayaking, trekking,
horse riding, paragliding, climbing, paintball,
mountain biking, jeep safaris and team build-
ing. Such product diversification does not
necessarily suggest spatial diversification, as the
leaders of these developments tend to be
located in the coastal areas. For example, two
Adriatic-based,
nautical tourism (comprising four different
groups of marinas, charters, cruisers and
boat trip operators, plus scuba diving).
The concept of associations is designed to
create public-private alliances and the Cham-
ber of Economy plays an important facilitating
role. It has designated (central and regional)
offices with a range of responsibilities related to
the regulation and organization of each specific
sub-sector and their industry linkages with
other groups and players (e.g. international tour
operators), to coordinate specific events and
projects, to build a database of resources and
