farmsteads of the island were taken by the
Department of Tourism and Recreation at
Klaip h da University. These efforts proved to be
a real success, and the number of farmsteads
providing rural tourism services doubled each
year from just two in 2000 to 28 in 2004, cater-
ing for the growing visitor demand from the
large cities of Lithuania attracted mainly by the
excellent all-year-round angling on the island
(Vaitek u nas et al ., 2001). The Šilut h district
municipality encourages environmentally friendly
rural tourism development on Rusn h Island
through the provision of a range of financial
incentives, including tax relief for rural tourism
service providers for the first 5 years, provision
of capital for public tourism facilities on the
island (e.g. bird observation towers and bike
paths), education and training of local tourism
service providers.
Thus, rural tourism development on Rusn h
Island is resulting from the growing interest of
the island's community and tourism service pro-
viders in turning local conservation values and
rich traditions into an asset for sustainable
development. Such interest has manifested itself
in restoring and cherishing the environment-
friendly traditional approaches of deltaic farm-
ing and fishing combined with the provision of
