INTRODUCTION
3.01
The first agricultural product quality policy measures, which incidentally dealt
with GIs and designations of origin, were laid down in Council Regulation
(EEC) No 1601/91 of 10 June 1991 laying down general rules on the defin-
ition, description and presentation of aromatised wines, aromatised wine-based
drinks and aromatised wine-product cocktails; 1 Council Directive 2001/
110/EC of 20 December 2001 relating to honey; 2 Council Regulation (EC) No
247/2006 of 30 January 2006 laying down specific measures for agriculture in
the outermost regions of the Union; 3 Council Regulation (EC) No 509/2006 of
20 March 2006 on agricultural products and foodstuffs as traditional speciali-
ties guaranteed; 4 Council Regulation (EC) No 510/2006 of 20 March 2006 on
the protection of geographical indications and designations of origin for
agricultural products and foodstuffs; 5 Council Regulation (EC) No 1234/2007
of 22 October 2007 establishing a common organisation of agricultural markets
and on specific provisions for certain agricultural products (Single CMO
Regulation); 6 Council Regulation (EC) No 834/2007 of 28 June 2007 on
organic production and labelling of organic products; 7 and Regulation (EC) No
110/2008 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 15 January 2008
on the definition, description, presentation, labelling and the protection of
