4. Existing protected wine names
4.182
Article 51(1) of the Wine Regulation provides that wine names which are
protected in accordance with Arts 51 and 54 of Regulation (EC) No 1493/
1999 44 and Art 28 of Regulation (EC) No 753/2002 45 shall automatically be
protected under this Regulation. The Commission shall list them in the register
provided for in Art 46 of this Regulation.

Article 28 of Regulation 753/2002 provides that each wine-producing Member
State has to notify to the EC Commission the list of names of geographical
units smaller than the Member State, as referred to in Art 51(1) of Regulation
1493/1999, 46 that may be used as GIs and the provisions regulating the use of
the terms and unit names. The Commission publishes the names of the
geographical units notified in the Official Journal of the European Communitie s.
Member States may adopt stricter rules on the use of these terms for wine
produced in their territory.
4.184
Annex VII(A)(2)(b) to Regulation 1493/1999 provides that the sales descrip-
tion of table wines with GIs must consist of the words 'table wine' and the name
of the geographical unit. Where special terms are used such as 'Landwein', 'vin
de pays', 'indicazione geografica tipica', 'vino de la tierra', 'vinho regional',
'regional wine' and the others specified by Art 28 of Regulation 753/2002, the
words 'table wine' are not required.
4.185
Article 28 Commission Regulation (EC) No 753/2002 provides that with
regard to the table wines described as:
+ 'Landwein' in the case of table wines originating in Germany, Austria and
in the Province of Bolzano in Italy,
+ 'vin de pays' in the case of table wines originating in France, Luxembourg
and the Region of Valle d'Aosta in Italy,
+ 'indicazione geografica tipica' or 'IGT' in the case of table wines originat-
ing in Italy,
+ 'vino de la tierra' in the case of table wines originating in Spain,
