laid down in Chapters IV and V shall apply to certain wines designated in
Annex IV of the Regulation. 30
According to Art 33(2) the rules referred to in Art 32(1) shall be based on:
4.17
(a) the protection of legitimate interests of:
(i) consumers; and
(ii) producers;
(b) ensuring the smooth operation of the common market in the products concerned;
(c) promoting the production of quality products, whilst allowing national quality
policy measures.
C. DEFINITIONS
1. Designation of origin
Article 34(1) provides that for the purposes of the Wine Regulation, the
following definitions shall apply:
4.18
(a) 'designation of origin' means the name of a region, a specific place or, in exceptional
cases, a country used to describe a product referred to in Art 33(1) that complies
with the following requirements:
(i) its quality and characteristics are essentially or exclusively due to a particular
geographical environment with its inherent natural and human factors;
(ii) the grapes from which it is produced come exclusively from this geographical
area;
(iii) its production takes place in this geographical area;
(iv) it is obtained from vine varieties belonging to Vitis vinifera .
Article 34(2) provides that certain traditionally used names shall constitute a
designation of origin where they:

(a) designate a wine;
(b) refer to a geographical name;
