level of NDT inspectors. The application of test samples is prescribed by
the draft European standard for certification in the field of nondestructive
testing (ENIQ). The technology used for manufacturing test samples is
described in detail in Ref. 12. There is a detailed description of the test
samples prepared for study of the detectability of the inspection of key
elements of the primary circuits of the VVER and RBMK reactors.
5.1.4 Experimental study of detectability of non-
destructive testing using test samples
Some of the results obtained in various programmes relating to the safety
of elements of the operating nuclear power plant reactors are described
below. The results are selected in such a way as to reflect the possibility
of solving the following problems: study of the detection of defects under
given inspection conditions, comparative analysis of different methods of
inspection, investigation of inspection technology to improve its efficiency;
study the effect of the 'human factor' on the testing results. All of these
problems were solved with respect to the conditions of VVER and RBMK
reactors.
Full-scale test samples with hidden artificial plane and volume defects
such as cracks, incomplete penetration, pores, slag inclusions, were produced
for major items of equipment and pipelines of the primary circuit of the
nuclear reactors.
Cracks and other defects of a given size and orientation were made in
the welds in specific areas. The term 'full-scale' reflects the fact on the
1:1 scale the sample corresponds approximately to the selected element of
