that the steam locomotive was naturally accepted on a deep feeling level by society.
A steam locomotive is a typical product that involves conventional engineering
design. Further, the author suggests the Japanese sword as an exemplar of a product
that is a work of art, as well as an outcome of conventional science and technology.
A Japanese sword is a curve-bladed weapon that has a single cutting edge. The
creation of a Japanese sword is a specialized traditional process that involves heating
and hammer-forged hardening. This type of sword is characterized by its great
spring-like toughness and its extremely sharp cutting edge. Recently, Japanese
swords are primarily considered art objects. They are often treasured for the sense
of tranquility apparent in their cold, serene beauty. In cases in which products are
designed through conventional engineering design, science and technology might be
rather acceptable to the culture of a society because science and technology and its
products are located close to one another and are both visible to the society. Further,
science and technology is believed to act as a leader of the culture of that society. In
fact, science and technology causes individuals to expand and recall feelings. This
ultimately stimulates and enhances the culture of the society. For example, bronze
casting technology expanded artists' abilities for self-expression. It enabled them to
create impressive art that could inspire deep feelings.
Alternatively, in cases in which products are designed through modern engi-
neering design, it might be difficult for highly advanced science and technology to
gain acceptance from the culture of a society because it remains separate from
products and it remains unimaginable and invisible to society. It can be difficult to
paint or describe highly advanced science and technology. However, it is not
necessarily impossible to gain acceptance from society, even if they cannot be
painted or described. For example, the physical principles of many electrical
products, such as televisions, personal computers, lighting equipment, and so on,
are invisible. However, they are used naturally in society. In addition, some
electrical products, such as personal computers, cell phones, and lighting, are
believed to have the potential to expand human minds. Some believe these products
can be interpreted by society because they appeal to individuals and cause them to
recall deep feelings. For example, many products developed by Apple Inc. appear
to expand the analogue world by the use of digital technology. However, it may take
some time before highly advanced science and technology might become naturally
accepted on deep feeling levels by society.
Second, it is important that a particular social system be developed to cope with
the negative aspects of science and technology and its products. As noted above, “a
car” is a product used globally. Many cars are designed and produced on a daily
basis. However, many people have been killed in car accidents. Why do we use
