Like a Local
While other Japanese sometimes accuse Kyotoites of being
haughty, our experience reveals the opposite. If you approach
people with an open mind and a smile on your face, you'll
more than likely find them to be extremely welcoming. Here
are places where you can meet the various tribes of the city.

Pretty Young Things
Kyoto's fashion-conscious teens and twenty-somethings spend their evenings and week-
ends seeking others of their kind in the shopping emporiums downtown (the square formed
by Shijō and Sanjō streets to the north and south, and Kawaramachi and Karasuma streets
to the east and west). While the main streets here have the big-name stores, don't be afraid
to head into the narrower backstreets to peruse the many boutiques, galleries, music shops
and cafes.
