Kyoto comes to life after the lull of the New Year holiday (things open on 3 or 4 January). It's cold, but not too cold
for travelling and the city is uncrowded.
Hatsumōde
This raucous festival on 1-3 January marks the first visit of the new year to a Shintō shrine.
Kyoto's three most popular shrines at this time are Yasaka-jinja ( CLICK HERE ), Heian-jingū
( CLICK HERE ) and Fushimi-Inari-Taisha ( CLICK HERE ). Transport and accommodation will
be crowded.
Tōshiya (Archery Contest)
Held at Sanjūsangen-dō ( CLICK HERE ) from 8am to 4pm on 15 January. Hundreds of
kimono-clad archers gather for a competition of accuracy and strength.
