TEA CEREMONIES TODAY
These days the tea ceremony is studied and practised by Japanese who want to deepen their
appreciation and mastery of traditional Japanese arts. In particular, many women from good
families study the tea cere-mony to deepen their aesthetic senses and to improve their mar-
riage prospects.
The tea ceremony is often compared to the world of the geisha in that the tea ceremony
is a nexus of traditional Japanese arts; it brings together garden design, architecture, calli-
graphy, flower arrangement, incense, kimono and many other traditional arts. Not surpris-
ingly, many geisha also practise the tea ceremony.
The tea room is normally entered by walking through a garden. The garden functions as a
transitional area where you leave daily life and enter the spiritual world.
