Called by some 'the Vatican of Pure Land Buddhism', this temple complex in the South-
ern Higashiyama district is a thriving hub of religious activity. The main hall is one of the
largest temple structures in Japan. Take off your shoes, go inside, take a seat on the floor
and allow yourself to be transported to blissful realms by the chanting of the monks. Then
head up the hill to admire the enormous 70-ton temple bell. This is truly the best place in
Kyoto to see how the Japanese practise Buddhism.
