Called by some 'the Vatican of Pure Land Buddhism', this vast temple is one of the most impressive sights in all of
Kyoto. The headquarters of one of Japan's most popular Buddhist sects, Chion-in receives millions of pilgrims an-
nually, and it's one of the best places to see Japanese religious faith in action. Enter the enormous main hall and
soak up the spiritual energy of the place: chanting monks, praying pilgrims and incense slowly spirally to the heav-
ens. Then set off and explore the many subtemples and halls.
