meat broth with meat and vegetables) to choose from and tasty sets that include things like
fried rice, fried chicken or gyōza (Chinese dumplings), all for about ¥800. It's pretty easy
to spot: look for the red-and-white sign and the words 'There is an English menu.'

( 池鶴 ; 221-3368; Nishikikōji-dōri, Yanaginobanba-Higashi-iru, Nakagyō-ku; juice ¥450; 9am-6.30pm,
closed Wed; 5min walk from Kawaramachi Station, Hankyū line) We love this fruit-juice specialist in
Nishiki Market. In addition to all the usual favourites, they sometimes have durian on
hand and can whip up a very unusual durian juice. Look for the fruit on display - it's on
the south side of the market, a little east of Yanaginobanba-dōri.

( パークカフェ ; 211-8954; 1F Gion Bldg, 340-1 Aneyakō-ji kado, Gokomachi-dōri, Nakagyō-ku; drinks
from ¥450; noon-11pm; 5min walk from Kyoto-Shiyakusho-mae Station, Tōzai subway line) This cool
little cafe always reminds us of a Melbourne coffee shop. It's on the edge of the Down-
town Kyoto shopping district and is a convenient place to take a break. The comfy seats
invite a nice long linger over a cuppa and the owner has an interesting music collection.

11.30am-11pm; 5min walk from Karasuma-Oike Station, Karasuma & Tōzai subway lines) For a quick cuppa
or a snack in groovy surroundings, this cosy coffee shop on the west side of Downtown
Kyoto is a very nice choice. We go there for decorating ideas as much as for the drinks.
It's closed on the third Wednesday of the month.

( 本家 田毎 ; 221-3030; Nakagyō-ku, Sanjō Teramachi Higashi iru; dishes ¥1000-1600, courses ¥3000-6000;
11am-9pm; ; 5min walk from Sanjō Station, Keihan line) This casual restaurant in the Sanjō
covered arcade serves a variety of soba (thin brown buckwheat noodle) and udon (thick
white wheat noodle) dishes. It can get crowded at lunchtime and the service can be rather
brusque, but the noodles are very good and the English/picture menu helps with ordering.
The tempura teishoku (set-course meal) makes a great lunch.
