( 吉川 ; 221-5544; Oike sagaru, Tominokōji, Nakagyō-ku; lunch ¥3000-25,000, dinner ¥6000-25,000;
11am-2pm & 5-8.30pm; ; 5min walk from Karasuma-Oike Station, Karasuma & Tōzai subway lines) This is
the place to go for delectable tempura. It offers table seating, but it's much more interesting
to sit and eat around the small counter and observe the chefs at work. It's near Oike-dōri in
a fine traditional Japanese-style building. Reservation required for tatami room; counter
and table seating unavailable on Sunday.

( 一風堂 ; 213-8800; 653-1 Bantōya-chō, Nishikikōji higashiiru, Higashinotōin, Nakagyō- ku; rāmen around
¥750-950; 11am-2am; ; 1min walk from Shijō Station, Karasuma subway line or Karasuma Station, Hankyū
line) There's a reason that there's usually a line outside this rāmen joint at lunchtime: the rā-
men is awesome and the bite-sized gyōza (Chinese dumplings) are to die for. We recom-
mend the gyōza set meal, which costs ¥750 or ¥850 depending on your choice of rāmen .
It's on Nishiki-dōri, next to a post office and diagonally across from a Starbucks.
TŌSUIRŌ¥¥

( 豆水楼 ; 251-1600; Nakagyō-ku, Kiyamachi-dōri, Sanjō agaru, Kamiōsaka-chō 517-3; lunch/dinner ¥2000/
5000; 11.30am-2pm & 5-9.30pm Mon-Sat, noon-8.30pm Sun; 5min walk from Kyoto-Shiyakusho-mae Station,
Tōzai subway line) We really like this specialist tofu restaurant. It's got great traditional Japan-
ese decor and in summer you can sit on the yuka (dining platform) outside and take in a
view of the Kamo-gawa. You will most probably be amazed by the incredible variety of
dishes that can be created with tofu. At lunch, the machiya-zen (tofu set; ¥2205) is highly
recommended. At dinner, we suggest the Higashiyama tofu set (¥3858). Tōsuirō is at the
end of an alley on the north side.

This giant four-storey dining hall is part of Kansai's biggest sushi chain. The ground floor
is the sushi area (you can order non-sushi dishes here as well); it has a long sushi counter
