HIGASHI HONGAN-JI
A short walk north of Kyoto Station, Higashi Hongan-ji is the focus of worship for millions of followers of Jōdo
Shin-shū (True Pure Land Buddhism), the most populist and inclusive of all Japanese Buddhist sects. The halls are
suitably vast, with glittering interiors that call to mind the Pure Land to which the followers of the sect aspire. The
soothing traditional contours of the main gate and main hall are usually the first traditional sights glimpsed by the
visitor to Kyoto - heartening symbols that 'Old Kyoto' can still be found amid the neon and concrete of the mod-
ern city.
