Arashiyama and Sagano, two adjoining neighbourhoods at the base of Kyoto's western
mountains, form the city's second-most-popular sightseeing district. Foreign and domestic
tourists flock here to see Tenryū-ji, a temple with a stunning mountain backdrop, and the
famous Arashiyama Bamboo Grove. There are also several small temples and a fine hill-
top villa.

The Kitayama (Northern Mountains) contain several quaint villages that make great day
trips out of the city: Kurama, Kibune and Ōhara. Other attractions in the Greater Kyoto
area include Uji, famous for tea and temples; Katsura, famous for its imperial villa; Takao,
famous for three mountain temples; and Hiei-zan, famous for the mountain temple of
Enryaku-ji.
