Neighbourhoods at a Glance
Dominated by the eponymous Kyoto Station, this neighbourhood serves as the gateway to
Kyoto. Apart from the impressive station building itself, this area is not particularly attract-
ive. That said, there are a few worthwhile sights here: Higashi Hongan-ji and Nishi
Hongan-ji are two vast temples within walking distance of the station.
If you don't give a hoot about temples, shrines and gardens, you might never leave Down-
town Kyoto (which is, naturally, smack in the middle of the city). It has just about
everything you need: an incredible variety of accommodation, restaurants, nightlife, shop-
ping and entertainment options. And, yes, there are even a few small temples, shrines and
museums, plus the famed Nishiki Market.
