and several days later stimulated the right vagus nerve to induce sinoatrial slowing
and/or block. In this setting, pacemaker activity originated in the left atrium and was
pacemapped to the site of injection. Increasing the intensity of the vagal stimulation
and adding left vagal stimulation caused cessation of biological pacemaker activity,
consistent with parasympathetic responsiveness. We disaggregated atrial myocytes
from the site of injection, demonstrated overexpressed pacemaker current, and
interpreted the sum total of results as indicating that such overexpressed pacemaker
current could provide escape beats under circumstances of sinus slowing [10].
