side chain MSP as a template to allow access to a conjugated metal-containing three
stranded polyrotaxane (Fig. 7.10). Metallorotaxane monomer 11 has thiophene moi-
eties attached to an electron-poor bipyridine unit as the thread component 10 and
electron-rich ethyelenedioxythiophene (EDOT) units, which can be oxidatively
polymerized at low potentials, on macrocycle 9. Thus, controlled oxidation of
monomer 11 causes electropolymerization of the macrocycle unit while leaving the
thread unreacted, yielding side chain pseudopolyrotaxane 12. Applying higher
