3. 2010 CalNex
ARCTAS-CARB 2008 was conducted as a pilot study to assist the design of an air
quality study planned for California (Cal) in 2010 to investigate the nexus (Nex)
between air quality and global climate change (2010 CalNex). The design of 2010
CalNex is guided by a set of science questions [7] that are oriented toward basic
science, policy, or both. The current plan [7] calls for several instrumented air-
crafts, an instrumented ship, a network of upper air meteorology and ozone
measurements, and at least two “super sites.” The number of individual chemical
species measured by aircrafts, ship, and at the super sites is expected to be
comparable to that measured during ARCTAS-CA 2008. One of the major goals
of 2010 CalNex is improving meteorology and photochemical models. This goal
will be achieved by measuring specific species/parameters that provide direct
insights into atmospheric processes. We will present the overall design of 2010
CalNex within the context of lessons learned during ARCTAS-CARB 2008.
