In-Depth Information
October
Post-rugby and pre-cricket sees sports fans twiddling their thumbs: a trip to
Kaikoura, Akaroa or Nelson perhaps? October is 'shoulder season' with reasonable
accommodation rates, minimal crowds and no competition for the good campsites.
Nelson Arts Festival
Sure, Nelson is distractingly sunny, but that doesn't mean the artsy good stuff isn't happen-
ing inside and out. Get a taste of the local output over two weeks in October
( www.nelsonfestivals.co.nz ).
Kaikoura Seafest
Kaikoura is a town built on crayfish. Well, not literally, but there sure are plenty of crusta-
ceans in the sea here, many of which find themselves on plates at Seafest
( www.seafest.co.nz ) , which is also a great excuse to drink a lot and dance around.
French Fest
Allez très vite to Akaroa's French Fest ( www.frenchfest.co.nz ) - held in odd-numbered
years in late October to celebrate the harbour town's Gallic heritage. Quirky events include
a waiters' race and a French cricket tournament. Sorry Aussies, underarm bowling is not al-
lowed.
Wanaka Fest
Wanaka's normally all about exploring the alpine vistas on two legs or two knobbly
mountain-bike tyres, but the lakeside town's emerging gourmet side is also showcased at
the annual Wanaka Fest ( www.wanakafest.co.nz ) . Come along and tuck into lots of local
produce.
