The Catlins

13 Even for many New Zealanders the rugged Catlins coast ( Click here ) is unknown
territory. Avoid the speedy but functional inland route linking Dunedin and Invercargill,
and traverse through the Catlins' more diverse and interesting procession of isolated bays
and coves, sweeping coastal scenery, and opportunities to meet the locals and the local
wildlife. Catlins' highlights include Blair Sommerville's quirky Lost Gypsy Gallery at Pap-
atowai, swimming (or surfing) with dolphins at Curio Bay, and the windswept environs of
Slope Point, the southernmost tip of the South Island.
