inference would be a condensation step following the initial ring-opening
reaction of the epoxide. To confirm this postulate, toluene was added to the
reaction mixture in a subsequent ring-opening reaction in order to azeotrope
off any condensed water formed into a Dean-Stark trap. This was confirmed
by the quantity of water collected in the trap during the reaction. Thus the
resulting ring-opening of the oxirane gave a vicinal diformate ester for each
oxirane unit of the substrate. The FT-IR spectrum of the product shows a
