Figure 8.9 ESI-MS spectra of (a) COPER and (b) COPERMA.
maleinization reaction. The intensities of the peaks at 665.1 and 807.1 were
relatively higher than those of the other half-ester peaks, indicating the
sucient maleinization of the COPER product into high-functionality
castor-oil-based maleate esters. Multiplicity seen in the mass spectra near
the intense peaks was caused by the natural abundance of various fatty acids
in castor oil.

8.3.2.1 Transparency and SEM Analysis
The transparency is directly related to the phase separation of polymer
samples. 11,12,14,23 In other words, a lack of transparency is the result of phase
separation. Figure 8.10 shows the transparency of the four polymer matrices
after curing. Four types of transparency were demonstrated: (A) opaque for
TOPERMA80-ST20, (B) quasi-opaque for TOPERMA70-ST30, (C) transparent
for TOPERMA67-ST33, and (D) half-transparent for TOPERMA60-ST40, re-
spectively. Hence, the order of the extent of phase-separation can be simply
listed as (A)4(B)4(D)4(C).
