Data for analysis are gathered by a variety of methods. Questionnaires, inter-
views, diaries, user log files, observations and computer monitoring are all used to
acquire data. As Garton et al. note, a participant might be asked about the frequency
of communication and also to specify the medium of interaction (1999: 90).
