Example
Coding Data in NVivo
1. Select (highlight) the data you want to code. (In the example, the text is
“Sometimes it's a thankless task.”)
2. Right-click on the text. When the menu appears, select Code and Code
Selection at New Node . This will allow you to create a new code.
3. In the naming menu, click on Selection in the upper right corner.
4. On the left, select Tree Nodes . On the right side will be a list of tree
nodes. Let's say that we believe that we've discovered a new code we
want to call “thankless” and it fits well within the tree nodes of experi-
ences of volunteer and negative . To create this new code, highlight neg-
ative and click the OK button.
5. In the blank for Name , we would type thankless . It's a good practice to
type a few notes regarding details as to why the code was selected and
any referential details.
6. When finished naming the code and typing notes, select OK . In the upper
window of tree nodes, thankless should appear in the listing under neg-
ative . If you double-click on thankless in the tree node listing, the text
highlighted to create the code should be listed.
