coding works in two popular software packages, HyperResearch and NVivo.
HyperResearch
A basic version of HyperResearch is available for download from the
ResearchWare web site (www.researchware.com). The free trial version is a
good way to evaluate the program before purchasing it. It is a fully functioning
application,butlimitsthemastercodelistto75codes,thestudytosevencases,
and each case to 50 code instances. These limitations don't present a problem
for testing the application, but would become a constraint for a large study.
The point here is not to try and be clever by using the free download as your
analytical application, because you'll eventually run into problems.
The following image shows the basic structure for doing analysis in
HyperResearch. On the right is an interview file. It is a text file and is imported
into the program as a text file. On the left is a different window, identifying the
contents of the study. Note that there are several codes such as “places family
needsaboveself”identifiedfrominterviewone.Inthisway,allofthecodescre-
atedforeachinterviewareidentifiedinthe“study”windowandareeasilyman-
aged and utilized for generating theory and testing hypotheses.
