Acronym Glossary
This appendix lists and defines the common acronyms used in this topic.
ACL access control list. A form of IOS filter designed for packet and route
classification and control.
AF address family. Types of IP addresses that share the same characteristics,
such as IPv4 and IPv6.
address family identifier. A value that represents an address family.
AFI
ARF automatic route filtering. Automatic filtering of routes by matching RTs
received versus those configured locally in an MPLS VPN network.
ARP Address Resolution Protocol. An IETF protocol to map an IP address to a
MAC address.
autonomous system. A BGP routing domain that shares the AS number.
AS
ASBR autonomous system border router. A router that interfaces with other
routing domains.
ATM
Asynchronous Transfer Mode. An international standard for cell relay.
BGP Border Gateway Protocol. An interdomain routing protocol for exchanging
reachability information among autonomous systems.
CE Customer Edge or Customer Edge router. This device is typically located at
the customer site and connects to the service provider network.
CEF Cisco Express Forwarding. A packet-forwarding mechanism in IOS that is
based on topology information.
command-line interface. An user interface that is purely based on commands.
CLI
Connectionless Network Service. An ISO network layer protocol.
