A semisynthetic derivative of avermectine, 22,23-dihydroavermectin B1,
called ivermectin ( 47 ), is 1000 times more active than thiabendazole and is a
commercial veterinary product.
The avermectins are closely related to the milbemycins ( 48 ), a group of nong-
lycosylated macrolides produced by Streptomyces hygroscopicus subsp. aureo-
lacrimosus (23). These compounds possess activity against worms and insects.

Monensin is a polyether ionophore antibiotic ( 49 ) produced by Streptomyces cin-
