cyclopropylpyrroloindole moiety (18). Bizelesin cleaves doubled-stranded DNA
by binding noncovalently within the minor groove with a consensus sequence of
5 -d(A/GNTTA)-3 and 5 -d(AAAAA)-3 .
Prodigiosin is mainly isolated from Serratia marcescens , although it can be
also found in unrelated species such as Vibrio psychroerythrus, Streptomyces
griseoviridis ,and Hahella chejuensis . Prodigiosin is a red pigment with a
pyrrolyldipyrrolylmethene moiety and a
-ring methoxy group ( 41 ), (dashed
rectangle) (20) that contains different alkyl substituents. In the presence of
reduced metal ions such asCu 2+ , prodigiosin is capable of cleaving single- and
double-stranded DNA. Prodigiosin functions via a mechanism similar to that
of CC-1065 and the bleomycins; however, it causes reductive activation of
molecular oxygen, forming reactive oxygen species such as hydrogen peroxide
that initiate the DNA cleavage (21).
