History
South India has always laid claim to its own unique history, largely resulting from its
insulation, by distance, from the political developments up north. The cradle of
Dravidian culture, it has a long and colourful historical tapestry of wrangling dynas-
ties and empires, interwoven with the influx of traders and conquerors arriving by
sea, all of which have richly contributed to shaping a remarkable mix of southern tra-
ditions that exist to the present day.
To learn more about the ancient Indus Valley civilisation, ramble around Harappa, ( www.harappa.com ),
which presents an illustrated yet scholarly overview.
