ald cavern, and the birdwatching - especially on the forest fringes - is rewarding; look out
for the blue-black racket-tailed drongo or golden oriole.
Sport fishing is another option, with Captain Hook's MAP ( 9434280543;

Beaches
The prettiest and most popular stretch of sand is the critically acclaimed Radhanagar Beach
(Beach 7) . It's a beautiful curve of sugar fronted by perfectly spiraled waves, all backed by
native forest. Late afternoon is the best time to visit to avoid the heat and crowds, as well
as for its sunset. The further you walk from the main entry the more privacy you'll get.
Elephant rides are possible in high season with work elephants, or, if you have a spare
?30,000, you can swim with Rajan, Barefoot Resort's elephant. Radhanagar is on the
northwestern side of the island about 12km.
Northwest of Radhanagar is the gorgeous 'lagoon' at Neils Cove , another gem of sheltered
sand and crystalline water. Swimming is prohibited dusk and dawn; and take heed of any
warnings regarding crocodiles ( Click here ) .
On the other side of the island from Radhanagar, the palm-ringed Beach 5 has your more
classic tropical vibe, with the bonus of shady patches and less sandflies. However, swim-
ming is very difficult in low tide when water becomes shallow for miles. Most of the is-
land's accommodation is out this way.
About 5km beyond No 5 Village, you'll find the low-key Kalapathar , another pristine
beach. There's an elephant training camp out this way, but not much action to see at the
time of research.
