In-Depth Information
Chiriya Tapu
Chiriya Tapu, 30km south of Port Blair, is a tiny village fringed by beaches and man-
groves, and is famous for celestial sunsets. It also has some of the best
diving
outside Have-
able dive companies that visit spectacular
Cinque Island
,
Rutland Island
and a wrecked ship.
Snorkelling is also reportedly very good off the beach at sunset point, though like many
places coral bleaching has occurred; enquire at the dive shops for more info.
There's also the
biological park
(Indian/foreigner ?20/50; 9am-4pm Tue-Sun)
, essentially a zoo,
but with a pleasant forested setting and natural enclosures for crocodiles, Andaman wild
pig, water monitors and spotted deer.
Most visit as a day trip from Port Blair, but
Wild Grass
(
9474204508; r incl breakfast ?4500;
)
has double-storey cottages looking out to green surrounds.
There are seven buses a day to Port Blair (?18, one hour); last bus is 6pm.
