( 2443910; www.welcomheritagehotels.com ; Fern Hill; r incl breakfast ?11,192-33,576; ) The Maharaja
of Mysore's splendiferous Anglo-Indian summer palace has been lovingly restored in gor-
geous, over-the-top princely colonial style; if you can afford to stay here, you really
should. All rooms are large suites, with antique furnishings, fireplaces and Jacuzzis. Play
billiards, walk in the huge, forest-surrounded grounds and dine on regal multicuisine fare
beneath vivid murals.
King's Cliff
( 2452888; www.littlearth.in ; Havelock Rd; r incl breakfast ?2129-5966; ) High above Ooty on Straw-
berry Hill is this classic colonial-era house with wood panelling, antique furnishings and
cosy lounge. The cheaper ones don't have quite the same old-world charm as the more ex-
pensive ones, however.

Kabab Corner

(Commercial Rd; mains ?70-300; 1-11pm) This is the place for meat eaters who are tiring of
South Indian vegetarian food. It doesn't look much from the outside, but here you can tear
apart perfectly grilled and spiced chunks of lamb, chicken and, if you like, paneer, sop-
ping up the juices with pillowy triangles of naan. The ?640 tandoori platter is exception-
ally good for a group; if there are fewer than four of you, it may defeat you.
