Carlton Hotel
MAP
( 240056; www.krahejahospitality.com ; Lake Rd; d/cottages incl half-board ?9550/14,500; ) The cream of
Kodai's hotels is a magnificent five-star colonial-era mansion that overlooks the lake.
Rooms are bright and spacious and some have private balconies. The common areas and
grounds very much succeed at recreating hill-station ambience, with stone walls, housie
(bingo) by the fireplace at 6.30pm, billiards, badminton, putting green and a bar that
might make you want to demand a scotch now, dammit, from the eager staff.

4 Vattakanal
Little Vattakanal village, about 4.5km southwest of the town centre, is a great rural retreat
for budget travellers. It's very popular with, among others, Israeli travellers, and a party
atmosphere develops here at busy times. Several village houses have rooms to rent for
about ?400 to ?600. Altaf's Cafe ( Click here ) has a few sizeable three-bed rooms accom-
modating up to five or six people (sometimes more!) with private bathroom for ?1000.
Eating
PT Rd is best for cheap restaurants and it's here that most travellers and students from the
international school congregate.

(PT Rd; mains ?55-200; 12.30-10pm) For North Indian cuisine, including tandoori (and any
nonveg curries in general), this little place is Kodai's favourite. It serves the best tandoori
chicken in South India, according to locals.
