From Madurai Junction station, 13 daily trains head north to Trichy (two to five hours)
and nine to Chennai, the fastest being the 6.45am Vaigai Express (Trichy 2nd/chair class
?71/253, two hours; Chennai ?132/488, eight hours). A good overnight train for Chennai
is the 8.35pm Pandyan Express (sleeper/3AC/2AC/1AC ?232/730/880/1500, nine hours).
To Kanyakumari the only daily train departs at 1.55am (sleeper/3AC/2AC ?157/398/640,
five hours), though there's a later train some days (at varying times). Trivandrum (three
trains daily), Coimbatore (two daily) and Bengaluru (onedaily) are other destinations.
Getting Around
The airport is 12km south of town and taxis cost ?300 to the centre. Alternatively, buses
15 and 16 run to/from the Periyar Bus Stand MAP GOOGLE MAP (West Veli St) . From the New
Bus Stand ( Click here ) , bus 5 (?4) shuttles into the city; an autorickshaw is ?100.
