Sri Jambukeshwara Temple

If you're visiting Tamil Nadu's five elemental
temples of Shiva, you need to visit Sri Jambukeshwara, dedicated to Shiva, Parvati and
the medium of water. The liquid theme is realised in the central shrine (closed to non-Hin-
dus), whose Shiva lingam reputedly issues a nonstop trickle of water. If you're taking bus
1, ask for 'Tiruvanakoil'; the temple is 350m east of the main road.

The hush of this 19th-century church makes an interesting contrast to the frenet-
ic activity of Trichy's Hindu temples. In the green, cool campus of Jesuit St Joseph's Col-
lege next door, an eccentric and dusty

tains the natural history collections of the Jesuit priests' excursions to the Western Ghats
in the 1870s. Bang on the door and the caretaker will let you in (if he's there).
