In-Depth Information
Prepaid taxi kiosks at the airport charge ?380/515 for a non-AC/AC cab to Egmore, and
slightly less to T Nagar.
AUTORICKSHAW
The city authorities have been trying to negotiate a deal with autorickshaw drivers for
fixed fares of ?10 per kilometre, with a minimum charge of ?20. If no deal eventuates,
drivers will doubtless continue refusing to use their meters and instead quote astronomical
fares for locals and tourists alike: you can expect to pay at least ?40 for a short trip down
the road, around ?80 for a 3km trip and ?100 to ?120 for 5km. Prices are at least 25%
higher after 10pm. There are prepaid booths outside the CMBT (?160 to Egmore) and
Central station.
BUS
Chennai's city bus system is worth getting to know, although buses get packed to over-
flowing at busy times. Fares are between ?3 and ?14 (up to double for express and deluxe
services, and multiplied by five for AC services). Route information is online at ht-
tp://busroutes.in/chennai . See also Click here .
