Chennai has possibly the most liberal licensing laws in India - for five-star hotels. Bars
and clubs at these hotels can serve alcohol 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and so
that's where most of the jumping joints are found. Other hotel bars mostly close at mid-
night. There are very few salubrious places to get a drink without loud music after about
