This hotel restaurant is probably the best place in Chennai to savour the delicious flavours
of Tamil Nadu's Chettinadu region. Chettiar cuisine is superbly spicy without being chilli-
laden, and includes a good number of meat dishes. In good weather you can sit out in the
leafy courtyard.

Murugan Idly Shop
(77 GN Chetty Rd, T Nagar; dishes ?25-75; 7am-11.30pm)
Those in the know generally agree this
particular branch of the small chain serves some of the best
idlis
and South Indian meals
in town. We heartily concur.

Eco Cafe
(Chamiers, 106 Chamiers Rd, RA Puram; mains ?250-375, breakfasts ?175-305; 8.30am-9.30pm)
This 1st-
floor cafe feels a continent away from Chennai, except that Chennai-ites love it too. Leafy
wallpaper, leaves through the windows, discreetly spaced tables, wonderful banana nut
bread and cappuccino, English breakfasts, American pancakes, pasta, quesadillas, waffles,
salads…

A calm ambience prevails in the four orange-toned rooms of this Keralan res-
taurant, holding just three or four tables each. Try the lightly spiced
pachakkari
vegetable
stew or
kozhi porichatu
(deep-fried marinated chicken) and wind up with
paal ada pay-

, a kind of sweet rice pudding.
