In-Depth Information
Each evening dozens of restaurants lining the beach promenade display the catch of the
day - just pick a fish, settle on a price (per fillet serve around ?350, tiger prawns ?550 per
half kilo) and decide how you want it prepared. Menus and prices are largely indistin-
guishable and don't vary much. Unlicensed places will serve alcohol in mugs, or with the
bottles hidden discreetly out of sight. For a dining splurge, the restaurants at Leela and
Vivanta by Taj are worth investigating.

(meals ?60-125; 9am-10pm) This little veg place hidden back from the beach doesn't look
like much, but it dishes up excellent, dirt-cheap Keralan cooking in a rustic setting of dirt
floor and plastic chairs.
Devi Garden Restaurant

(NUP Beach Rd; mains ?30-170; 7.30am-11pm) Garden is overstating it, but this tiny, family-run
eatery just up the road from the taxi stand whips up great veg and nonveg Indian and
Chinese food at refreshingly reasonable prices - most veg dishes are under ?80.

Waves Restaurant & German Bakery

(Beach Hotel; breakfast ?70-300, mains ?150-550; 7am-11pm) With its broad, burnt-orange balcony,
ambient soundtrack and wide-roaming menu, Waves is always busy with foreigners. It
morphs with the German Bakery, a great spot for breakfast with fresh bread, croissants,
pastries and decent coffee, while dinner turns up Thai curries, German sausages and sea-
food. There's a small bookshop attached.
Swiss Cafe
MAP GOOGLE MAP
(mains ?70-390; 7.30am-11pm) Swiss Cafe stands out for tasty Euro dishes like rosti,
schnitzel, pasta and pizza, as well as the usual fresh seafood and Indian staples. The bal-
cony with its wicker chairs is a good place to take in the action.
