(Masab Tank; Indian/foreigner ?10/100; 10.30am-5pm) Andhra Pradesh's 33 tribal groups, based
mostly in the northeastern part of the state, comprise several million people. This mu-
seum, run by the government's Tribal Welfare Department, exhibits photographs, diora-
mas of village life, musical instruments and some exquisite Naikpod masks. It's basic, but
you'll get a glimpse into the cultures of these fringe peoples. There's also an excellent lib-
rary (library 1-2pm & 4-5pm).

(Public Gardens Rd, Nampally; admission ?10, camera/video ?100/500; 10.30am-4.30pm Sat-Thu) This
sprawling museum hosts a collection of important archaeological finds from the area, as
well as an exhibit on Andhra's Buddhist history, with relics of Buddha himself. There are
also Jain and bronze sculpture galleries, a decorative-arts gallery and a 4500-year-old
Egyptian mummy.
The museum is in a fanciful building constructed in 1920 by the seventh nizam as a
playhouse for one of his daughters. It, along with the gorgeous Legislative Assembly MAP
GOOGLE MAP building nearby (also commissioned by the nizam), is floodlit at night.
Buddha Statue & Hussain Sagar

(boats adult/child ?50/25) Set picturesquely on a plinth in the Hussain Sagar, a lake built by the
Qutb Shahs, is one of the world's largest free-standing stone Buddha statues. It's an espe-
cially magnificent sight when illuminated at night.
Frequent boats make the 30-minute return trip to the statue from both Eat Street

9am-9pm) . It's a pleasant place to enjoy sunsets and the popular musical fountain and laser
show. The Tankbund Rd promenade, on the eastern shore of Hussain Sagar, has great
views of the statue.
HISTORIC BUILDING
British Residency
( 24657813) This ornate home, built in 1803 by British Resident James Achilles Kirk-
patrick, was featured in William Dalrymple's historical love story White Mughals . Kirk-
patrick became enchanted by Mughal culture and eventually married Khair-un-Nissa, the
teenage granddaughter of Hyderabad's prime minister. The Residency, now part of Koti
Women's College, was in disrepair at research time but was about to undergo restoration.
