Getting There & Away
Be aware that trains arriving from Mumbai or Goa, and private buses from Hampi/Hospet,
may get you into Gokarna at the ungodly hour of 3am, so it might be worth notifying your
guesthouse to see if there's someone who can check you in.
BUS
From the KSRTC bus stand, buses roll to Madgaon in Goa (?100, four hours) at 8.15am or
otherwise to Karwar (?33, 1½ hours), which has connections to Goa. There are buses to
Hospet (?240, nine hours) for Hampi, Bengaluru (from ?415, 12 hours) and Mangalore
(?200, 6½ hours), to Kunda (?25) for Jog Falls (?100) and frequent direct buses run to
Hubli (?134, four hours).
TRAIN
Many express trains stop at Gokarna Rd station, 9km from town; however, double check
your ticket as some stop at Ankola, 26km away. Many of the hotels and small travel agen-
cies in Gokarna can book tickets.
The 3am Matsyagandha Express goes to Mangalore (sleeper ?200, 3½ hours); the re-
turn train leaves Kumta around 6pm for Margao (sleeper ?200, 2½ hours) and Mumbai.
