Srirangapatnam

Steeped in bloody history, the fort town of Srirangapatnam, 16km from Mysore, is built
on an island straddling the Cauvery River. The seat of Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan's power,
this town was the de facto capital of much of southern India during the 18th century. Srir-
angapatnam's glory days ended when the British waged an epic war again Tipu Sultan in
1799, when he was defeated and killed. However, the ramparts, battlements and some of
the gates of the fort still stand, as do a clutch of monuments. The island is now linked to
the mainland by bridge.
There's no real reason to stay overnight, but Mayura River View (
252114; d from ?2300, res-
) has a nice location on the riverbank and is a good place to lunch.
