Forts & Palaces
Historically South India has a uniquely colourful tapestry of wrangling dynasties, interwoven with the influx of seafaring
traders and conquerors. Today some of their legacies can be seen in the region's remarkable collection of palaces and
forts.
Mysore The Maharaja's Palace is one of India's largest and most spectacular royal buildings. Within the walls of this
grand Indo-Saracenic complex are rare artworks, stained glass, mosaic floors and beautifully carved wooden fittings.

Maharashtra The land of Shivaji is almost as much of a fort junkie as Rajasthan (which has a particularly prolific royal
heritage) with defensive masterpieces like Daulatabad ( Click here ) , camouflaged on a hilltop, and Janjira, an island fort-
ress.
Hyderabad The rugged Golconda Fort, whose gem vault once stored the Hope and Koh-i-Noor diamonds, complements
the ethereal palaces of the City of Pearls. ( Click here )
Bidar Fort So weathered and peaceful you'll just have to trust that it was once the seat of a powerful sultanate. ( Click
