TOP OF CHAPTER
Mandrem
Peaceful, hidden Mandrem has become a refuge for those seeking a break from the travel-
ler scenes of Arambol and Anjuna - and those who avoided the scene to begin with. The
beach is beautiful, and there's little to do but laze on it with a good book. Cocohuts can be
had from ?600 to ?1000. It's not easy to get here by public transport; hire a scooter or cab
in Arambol.
There's lots of yoga around, mostly taught by foreigners each season.
Himalaya Yoga Valley

specialises in hatha and ashtanga teacher-training
courses, but also has drop-in classes (?300) twice daily.

Dunes Holiday Village

; huts ?900-1100; )
The pretty huts here are peppered around a
palm-forest allée leading to the beach, and at night, globe lamps light up the place like a
palm-tree dreamland. Dunes also has friendly, helpful staff, and a good restaurant on the
beach.

Cuba Retreat

; d without/with AC ?1650/2200; )
One of a number of fine Cuba
properties around Goa, this one really scores for its retro white-and-green exterior, clean
rooms with spring mattresses, kind staff and good bar-restaurant in the courtyard.

Villa River Cat
( 2247928;

; 438/1 Junasawaddo; d ?3015, with bathroom ?3770-4800; )
Styling it-
self as a retreat for artists, writers and other bohemian types, this unusual circular Por-
tuguese guesthouse is filled with art, antiques and a lot of pets. The riverside location
(close to the beach) is lovely but might not justify this price.
