Eating
Calangute and Baga have everything from fresh fish cooked up on a beach barbecue to the
finest Italian proscuitto in homemade pasta. The main beach strip is thick with vendors
selling grilled corn, pav bhaji (spiced vegetables and bread) and luminescent candyfloss,
as well as the usual beach-shack fare. Dining gets more sophisticated to the north and
south - some of Baga's best restaurants are along the road north of the Baga River. Calan-
gute's busy market area, meanwhile, is filled with chai-and-thali joints.

(thali ?100-125, mains ?80-200; 11am-10pm) On the 1st floor, at a slight remove from the chaos
of the market intersection below, is the pure-veg Plantain Leaf. The many Indian families
that fill the booths here know a good thing when they see it: cosy, busy and bright, and the
veg thali might be the best you'll get in Goa.

(Calangute-Baga Rd; pastries ?80-150, mains ?180-300; 7.30am-midnight) What started out as Calan-
gute's best little bakery has matured and morphed into a fabulous little two-level Italian
restaurant. It's still a great place for breakfast, loaded with homemade croissants, flaky
pastries and real coffee, but it's also a fine lunch or dinner spot with Goan and Italian spe-
cialities, wine and thoughtful cocktails.

cool jazz and sparkling crystals, this is the place to spoil yourself with the likes of Serrano
ham, grilled asparagus, French wines and Italian cheeses. Start with tapas plates and move
on to a world menu featuring European, Asian and India flavours.
