Climbing the
stairs to the Upper House is like stepping into a cool European restaurant, with a modern
but elegant dining space overlooking the Municipal Gardens at the front, a chic neon-lit
cocktail bar next door and more formal restaurant space at the back. But the food is very
much Goan - a high standard of regional specialities such as crab
xec xec
(crab cooked in
a roasted-coconut gravy), pork vindaloo, and fish-curry-rice done the old-fashioned way.
Even the veg adaptations (eg mixed veg and mushroom
xacuti
) are show-stoppers.
Hotel Venite
(31st January Rd; mains ?210-280; 9am-10.30pm)
Atmospheric Venite is a long-time tourist fa-
vourite: its tiny, rickety balcony tables make the perfect lunchtime spot. Success may have
gone to Venite's head - the Goan food is OK but the prices are exorbitant. We still love
the place though - call in for a cold beer or snack and chill out on the balcony before de-
ciding.

Sher-E-Punjab
(18th June Rd; mains ?80-200; 10.30am-11.30pm)
Sher-E-Punjab is widely regarded as one of the
best North Indian places in town, catering to well-dressed locals with its generous, care-
fully spiced Punjabi dishes. There's a pleasant garden terrace out back. The food at the

George Bar & Restaurant
(Church Sq; mains ?90-170; 9.30am-10.30pm)
Slightly cramped wooden tables and a healthy mix
of drunks and families make for a down-to-earth local vibe, and there's an air-con section
upstairs. Seafood and Goan classics are the speciality.
