In-Depth Information
you're a lone male Indian traveller, be aware that most hotels will be reluctant to rent you
a room.
MTDC Resort
( 260318; Bombay Point Rd; d from ?1645) This large-scale operation is situated about 2km
southwest from town, and comes with quieter and greener surroundings. Rooms come in
various grades but all smack of government aesthetics and suffer from the incredibly
damp environment. Taxis can drop you here from the city centre for about ?50.
HOTEL $
Hotel Panorama
( 260404; www.panoramaresorts.net ; 28 MG Rd; d without/with AC from ?4150/4750; ) Business
meets leisure at Mahabaleshwar's most reputed midtown address. Professionally man-
aged, it boasts clean, comfy and tastefully appointed rooms, and there's some great veget-
arian food at the restaurant. There's a good-sized pool, and a water channel where you
might want to ride a paddle boat.
HOTEL $$
Hotel Vyankatesh
( 260575; hotelvkt@yahoo.com ; MG Rd; d from ?2000) A typically overpriced hotel cashing in on
Mahabaleshwar's never-ending tourism boom. Located behind a textile store, this place
has slightly dreary, boxy rooms, but so have lots of hotels around town.
HOTEL $$
Eating & Drinking
Elsie's Dairy & Bakery
(MG Rd;
BAKERY $
7.30am-1pm) Since 1849 says the sign. Great for fresh cakes, biscuits, bread and
nostalgia.
Aman Restaurant
(MG Rd; mains ?80-150) Little more than a roadside stall, Aman can pull out some amazing ke-
babs and other meaty bites.
INDIAN $
MULTICUISINE $$
Grapevine
(Masjid Rd; mains ?130-350; 9.30am-3pm & 5-10pm) Skip this place, and you've missed half the
fun in town. Tucked away behind the main drag, this tiny restaurant serves a delectable
range of Indian, Continental and Thai dishes using organic vegetables and (safe) seafood.
